I was at Chedworth School between 1961 and 1963 when I went to Westwoods. I was Liz Dodd and my father was farm manager for John Shedden at Greenhill Farm. I remember Jenny Knights I think - did you wear glasses? Can clearly remember the big black heating boilers that we used to stand around and melt chocolate fingers from the tuck shop on! Also remember picking rosehips in brown hessian bags - received 3d a pound and used to have the money in time for Cirencester Mop. Most of my in-laws still live in the area but we live in Bedfordshire.

Hello there,
your new school looks wonderful.
I was there from 1957 to 1963 when we lived at Whitegates and it was very different. As Sue Way said, we only had 3 classrooms and lunch was in the (black corrugated iron) village hall across the grass. This also doubled as Dr Coffee's surgery.

The railway bridge was somewhere to rush to and hang over when a steam train went under - heaven knows what our mothers thought of all the soots!

Highlight of our week was Friday afternoon, when the ice cream van called during break.

Finding this site has brought back so many happy memories (- and some sadder ones, such as Mr Easter dying of a heart attack.)

Maybe one day I will be back and visit you, but I am living in Edinburgh, Scotland. As I am an artist I have appreciated the lovely art work on here and still remember the big posters that were on our walls.
Good luck everyone.

How amazing is the internet? To find this link to my childhood is astonishing! What a lovely site this is.
I attended St Andrews from 1956 to 1960, when kindly Mrs Broad took the infants, before we were passed on to the lovely Miss Hudman and thence on to Mr Easter, the Headmaster. Then, there were only 3 classrooms, old 2-seater wooden desks with inkwells and outside toilets. We would run to hang over the bridge for a steam train passing underneath. I cannot imagine our mothers were best pleased but we thought it smelled great!
We also saved our pocket money for the Friday afternoon visit from the ice cream van - does it still come?
School dinners were taken in the village hall, which also doubled up as GP's surgery for Dr Coffee.
Just outside was where the travelling Dentist parked his mobile van - we all waited our turns with dread, because we could hear the whine of the drill far too well.
So many memories come flooding back...frozen bottles of milk sitting in a corner of the classroom, the big solid fuel stove, skipping and hopscotch and jacks at playtime.
Walking home to Whitegates along the railway embankment, picking violets and primroses in the spring, wild strawberries in the summer, Hazel nuts and rose hips in the autumn (for which we got paid, because the hips went to make rosehip syrup for babies).
Also remember the Church very well, and Sunday School.
It would be so nice to hear from anyone else who was there around then.
Thank you for bring back such great memories of a very happy time.

Just found your website. I was at St Andrews from 1954-1960, with Miss Keys (Mrs Broad), Miss Hudman (later Mrs Andrews) and Mr Easter. I went on to Westwoods Grammar School at Northleach, which is now a housing estate. Now I'm a teacher in a Junior school, with only a few more years to go before I retire! Your photos show a very different school from the 3-roomed, coke-boiler heated one with outside toilets I attended!

I have visited your website at the invitation of Mrs Belinda Bacon. Belinda used to work at our school and was a much valued member of staff. I think your website (and school) is just fantastic. How clever of Belinda to find such a great place to work!

We miss Belinda - but no doubt our loss is your gain! Thank you for letting me look at your web site.

Best Wishes,

Wow , you have started another school year at St Andrews, while in Australia we are going into our spring holidays and almost finished for another year. Sam and I love to go onto the web site and check out the things you are doing, mummy loves reading the newsletters, we especially like the new picture on the web page, we think it is a Kookaburra, they are always in our garden digging for worms to eat. Hello to all our friends at Chedworth, we still miss you all. love Lucy and Sam
