St Andrew's Governing Body

We would like to welcome you to St Andrew's Church of England School.
As we are a Church of England School, the majority of governors, known as Foundation governors, are appointed by the Diocesan Board of Education who consult with the churches of Chedworth and Yanworth. The Parochial Church Council represent the church authority and ensure the character of the School as a Voluntary Aided School is preserved. Being a Voluntary  Aided School gives the governors greater roles and responsibilities as they employ all the staff within the school and are responsible for the upkeep of the premises.  The premises are held on trust by the Church of England, not the Local Authority as with many other schools.  The LEA appoint one governor as their representative and the other governors, parent and staff governors, are elected.

As governors we have overall responsibility for the school. The day to day running of the school is, of course, in the hands of the Headteacher. Our role is to provide a strategic overview to ensure continuing improvement in the school's performance and by providing support, advice and information to all the staff, act as a 'critical friend'.

We enjoy visiting the school regularly and attend full governor meetings twice a term as well as regular sub-committee meetings covering such areas as curriculum, finance & premises and special educational needs. Whilst we have a broad membership, with governors from many different walks of life, most of us have been associated with the school as parents or local residents for many years.

We also take part in the regular reviews of the Policies that the school has in place. These cover many important topics, including all the curriculum subjects, Performance Review and Health and Safety. We also approve the budget each year. Most of us also have a special interest and responsibility for a particular aspect of school life. This results in our having regular dialogue with the teachers and, in some cases, the children themselves, which is a great pleasure and relief from the considerable bureaucracy involved in school life!
